Michael Hirsh is currently National Economics Correspondent for Newsweek, based
in the Washington bureau. He also is Newsweek’s Washington web editor. From that position he orchestrated, wrote, reported and edited part of the magazine’s political coverage of the 2008 primary and general-election campaign for Newsweek.com. In addition to his work for the magazine, he writes a weekly column on Newsweek.com under the rubric "The World from Washington," focusing on political, economic and foreign-policy issues.
From January 2001 to mid-2002, Mr. Hirsh was Newsweek’s Foreign Editor and helped guide the magazine’s award-winning coverage of the September 11 attacks and the war on terror. Prior to that, he was chief diplomatic correspondent in the Washington bureau, writing about foreign affairs and international economics. He has done on-the-ground reporting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Michael Hirsh also served as the managing editor and then the top editor for a series of special annual issues of Newsweek timed to coincide with the annual gathering in Davos, beginning with “Issues 2000.”
Mr. Hirsh was Business Editor of the international edition of Newsweek, based in New York, from 1995 to 1997. Before joining Newsweek in October 1994 as a New York-based senior writer, he served as the Tokyo-based Asia Bureau Chief for Institutional Investor from 1992 to 1994. Previously, he had been a correspondent for the Associated Press in Tokyo and a National Editor in New York, overseeing the AP’s domestic report.
Michael Hirsh is also a successful author, having written two timely books. His latest, CAPITAL OFFENSE: How Washington’s Wise Men Handed America’s Future Over to Wall Street (John Wiley & Sons, 2010), is a narrative history of the "best and brightest" of the economic and political world from the Reagan revolution on, with a focus on the era of Greenspan, Rubin and Summers in the ‘90s, the Bush years, and culminating in the financial disaster and the attempts to fix the system afterward.
His previous title, AT WAR WITH OURSELVES: Why America is Squandering Its Chance to Build a Better World (Oxford University Press, 2003), was called by famed commentator, Fareed Zakaria, “the best book on foreign policy tensions today”. Bill Keller, in The New York Times described the book as “well informed, historically literate, nonideological common sense. That might sound like faint praise, but in an America that sometimes seems poised between reckless adventure and helpless inertia, centrist common sense is something to be treasured.”
Michael Hirsh is a trusted expert and has appeared as a commentator on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and National Public Radio. In addition to Newsweek, he has also written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Harper's, and Washington Monthly.
Mr. Hirsh was the co-winner of the Overseas Press Club Award for best magazine reporting from abroad in 2001 for "prescience in identifying the al Qaeda threat half a year before September 11" and for Newsweek's coverage of the war on terror, which also won a National Magazine Award. He co-authored the November 3, 2003 cover story, "Bush's $87 Billion Mess," about the Iraq reconstruction plan, one of three issues that won the 2004 National Magazine Award for General Excellence. Previously, he won a Deadline Club Award in 1997 for investigative reporting for his expose of the IRS's abusive practices, and was one of five finalists for a 1994 Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism for his article for Institutional Investor, "China's Financial Revolutionaries." It profiled the new generation of mainland Chinese businessmen who are striving to build a capitalist financial system from scratch.
Michael Hirsh graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University in 1979 with a B.A. in Philosophy and holds a graduate degree from Columbia University in International and Public Affairs.
