Lando...Web of Deceit author and former "60
Minutes" producer
Prior
to writing his book, WEB OF DECEIT, Barry
Lando was a producer for CBS’ “60 Minutes” for more
than 25 years.
Based
first in Washington, D.C., he helped pioneer investigative
reporting for the news show. Later in Paris, he
covered dramatic events around the globe, from the
overthrow of the Shah in Iran to the mounting turmoil
in the Middle East, the breakup of the Soviet Union,
and the opening of China to the world. |

Working
primarily with Mike Wallace, but also with Steve Kroft,
Ed Bradley, and Diane Sawyer, Lando participated in interviews
with such prominent figures as the Ayatollah Khomeini,
Kurt Waldheim, Robert Mugabe, Nelson Mandela, Ezer Weitzman,
Yassir Arafat, Anwar Sadat, and Deng Xao Peng. For his
reporting he won several top journalism awards including
two Emmies, a Dupont, Peabody, and George Polk.
After
leaving “60 Minutes” in 1997, Lando first traveled around
the world with his wife and six year old son; then he
returned to Paris where he continued to work as a journalist.
Over
the years, his articles have been published in many top
magazines and newspapers, such as The International
Herald Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The
Toronto Globe and Mail, Le Monde, Atlantic
Monthly, the New Republic, The Nation,
and Salon.com.
In
2004, he prepared an hour-long documentary on foreign
intervention in Iraq for Canal + in France,
which was rebroadcast around the world. (though never
in the United States). He then spent another year and
a half to further research and write WEB OF DECEIT:
The History of Western Complicity in Iraq from Churchill
to Kennedy to George W. Bush.

Lando
grew up in Vancouver, Canada, then received a B.A.
magna cum laude at Harvard University in Latin American
history. While at Harvard, he also began traveling
to Latin America, freelancing articles for Canadian
and American newspapers. He was briefly imprisoned
in Cuba in 1961 during the Missile Crisis. |
After
one year at Harvard Law School, Lando switched to graduate
studies in Latin American affairs at Columbia University
in New York. He received a Masters Degree for a thesis
on the Cuban Revolution, then left academia to work as
a correspondent for Time-Life in Brazil, Peru
and Ecuador.
In
1967, he returned to New York and then joined CBS News.
One of his first assignments was to help cover the Democratic
Convention in Chicago and the racial and political turmoil
throughout the Midwest. In 1971 he began work as a producer
with “60 Minutes” in Washington, D.C.
Lando
currently resides in Paris with his French wife, Elisabeth
and his son Edward, 14. He has two other children: Jeffery
who produces and directs films in Vancouver, Canada, and
Dominique, a therapist in Berkeley, California.
Meanwhile,
Lando continues to write articles on Iraq and the Middle
East for various media, including two recent OpEd pieces
for The Los Angeles Times and The Toronto
Globe & Mail. He also maintains his own very
